Winter cereal species, cultivar, and harvest timing affect trade-offs between forage quality and yield

چکیده

Volatile feed costs and extreme weather events are contributing to greater economic risk precarity throughout much of the United States dairy industry. These challenges have prompted farmers seek ways reduce imports without compromising milk production. For organic farmers, need produce more homegrown forage is exacerbated by high cost limited supply feed. Integrating winter cereals for as part a double-cropping system potential solution, but increasing amount in cow rations can production if forages not managed optimal quality. Organically field experiments Maryland (MD) New York (NY) were conducted address two primary objectives: (1) determine yield quality cereals—four cultivars each barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.), cereal rye Secale cereale triticale (× Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus.)—grown harvested at different crop growth stages, (2) evaluate trade-offs between relation phenology harvest date. Mean commonly stage, swollen boot (Zadoks 45), was 1.3, 2.2, 2.2 Mg ha −1 MD 1.8, 2.5, 2.9 NY barley, rye, triticale, respectively. relative (RFQ) same stage 180, 158, 163 179, 156, 157 three species. Overall, reached earliest, produced highest RFQ retained longest, yields. Based on these results, should consider priority winter-hardiness concern; an early most important; schedule flexibility would be valuable. findings used better meet needs enhance performance, improve synchronization timing with specific lactating cows, dry heifers, calves.

Legume-Cereal Intercropping Improves Forage Yield, Quality and Degradability.

Intercropping legume with cereal is an extensively applied planting pattern in crop cultivation. However, forage potential and the degradability of harvested mixtures from intercropping system remain unclear. To investigate the feasibility of applying an intercropping system as a forage supply source to ruminants, two consecutive experiments (experiments 1 and 2) involving a field cultivation t...

Trade-Offs between Yield and Reliability Enhancement *

Deep sub-micron VLSI technologies have led to a large increase in the number of devices per die as well as the switching speeds. These advances have been accompanied by increased design complexity and decreasing reliability. Scaling of the device dimensions has introduced “analog” effects on-chip that he causing signal integrity and delay problems. These problems are not easy to estimate and re...

Winter Cereal–Corn Double Crop Forage Production and Phosphorus Removal

Maximizing P removal with cropping can increase regulated Pbased manuring rates or reduce soil test P in manure-enriched soils. The potential for increased P removal with winter forage–corn silage double cropping was evaluated in a 3-yr study at Parma, ID. Winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and both winter and spring genotypes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and triticale (3Triticosecale Wittm...

Competition and facilitation between a native and a domestic herbivore: trade-offs between forage quantity and quality.

Potential competition between native and domestic herbivores is a major consideration influencing the management and conservation of native herbivores in rangeland ecosystems. In grasslands of the North American Great Plains, black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) are widely viewed as competitors with cattle but are also important for biodiversity conservation due to their role in cre...
